History in the Air: Archaeologists are Sniffing Out What Ancient Egypt Smelled Like The smell is a strong stimulus. It aids visual as well as mental activity to a great extent. The Olfactory receptors (located in the upper region of the nasal passage) of humans in the times of yore, reacted to smells different than what we experience today.
