Protests As Pro Kurdish Mayors Stripped of Posts In Turkey Protesters clashed with police outside the municipal building in Turkey's southeastern province of Mardin on Monday, 4 November, after Ankara removed three elected pro-Kurdish mayors from office. According to the interior ministry, the officials were dismissed due to convictions and charges related to terrorism, with state-appointed officials filling their positions.Governors were installed as replacements in the provincial centres of Mardin and Batman, and the mayor of Halfeti in Sanliurfa province was also removed. All three mayors were members of the pro-Kurdish DEM Party, which currently holds 57 seats in Turkey’s national parliament. Previously, many pro-Kurdish mayors from related political parties have faced similar dismissals.In a related incident last week, a mayor from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) was detained following accusations of links to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a group classified as a terrorist organisation in Turkey. These dismissals and arrests align with a recent proposal by President Tayyip Erdogan’s chief ally aimed at resolving Turkey’s 40-year conflict with the PKK.
